Set in a “historical firehouse”, this Tacoma tavern taps “tons of good beers”, including “proprietary brews” and “global favorites”, at “reasonable prices”; the exposed-brick space can get “very loud, very fast” since it's “always packed” (the “outdoor seating” is a quieter, warm-weather alternative), but service “never takes a hit”, thanks to “friendly and quick” staff.

“The Engine House just oozes history,” says John Xitco, co-owner of X Group Restaurant, Catering and Brewery, who bought the Engine House No. 9 in August of 2011. “New customers can expect the real deal in terms of a firehouse, [with a] friendly welcome and warm, casual atmosphere that has developed over years of use and love.”

We’ve got some extraordinary breweries here in Washington, and you don’t have to be a beer lover to enjoy them (although it doesn’t hurt). Tacoma’s first craft brewery, Engine House No. 9, is located in a century-old firehouse — and that’s not the only thing that makes it great. Not only is the beer selection fantastic, but the food is exceptional.
